Sue raced through Meadowood's walkways, eager to ask Espio for an extra set of hands downstairs, as she and Lindy were about to outfit her hovercar with a pair of hoverunit cannons. Once she reached the the lookout tower where Espio was supposed to stand guard, Sue carefully climbed the wooden ladder, one step at a time. The tower stood twenty feet taller than the highest lodge, and was accessible only by a ladder, made entirely out of wood. The platform stood twelve feet in diameter, giving whoever was on lookout duty a little room to relax. As soon as Sue reached the top, she found the purple chameleon on the platform. "Hey, Espio!..."

However, the chameleon didn't respond to the greeting. In fact, Espio never even heard it. The boy, while seated on the provided stool as he should have been, had slumped forward onto his folded arms against the wooden wall. Apparently, he'd fallen asleep on the job.

"Ohhhh, that little..." Sue climbed onto the platform, walked up to Espio, and gently throttled the boy, her fingerclaws digging slightly into his scales. "C'mon, Espy, get up," she said, her voice a mixture of concern and anger. "You don't want anyone else to see you like this, do ya?"

At the disturbance, Espio's eyes quickly blinked open; he looked startled more than anything. "I'm up! I'm up!!" he squawked in a quasi-confused voice. Glancing over his shoulder, the chameleon was relieved to not be looking into the eyes of his guardian. "Oh, hey Sue. What's up?"

"What's up?" Sue said, slightly angrily, her head tilted slightly to the right. "I wanted to ask if you were interested in helping me and Lindy in the garage. Now I find you sleepin' on the job!" At that moment, Sue switched from bad cop to good cop. Sighing heavily, Sue placed a hand on Espio's shoulder, gently rubbing it. "Listen, are you feeling all right?"

The chameleon cringed under the lashing, but settled when Sue's tone changed. "Yeah, I'm okay. I must have just dozed off..." Espio rose to his feet and popped his spine. "Weird, since I didn't think I was even tired."

This piqued Sue's curiosity a bit further. She grabbed the other stool nearby, pulled it up, and sat down next to the purple chameleon. "What, you were standing guard one moment, and the next, you—" She snapped her fingers. "—crashed?"

"I... I guess so?" Espio replied with a sheepish chuckle. "I do know I was really bored. Maybe I just drifted off without realizing it."

"Ahhhhh. First time you drifted, huh?" Sue crossed her legs, trying to get into as comfortable a position as she could. "You DO get enough sleep, do you, Espio?"

The boy shrugged. "I'unno. I sleep when I feel tired, I'm up when I don't."

Sue thought about it a little, trying to piece the spicks and specks of information into a unified whole: if Espio slept whenever he felt tired, and he didn't feel tired when he fell asleep... Sue speculated internally that he may have come down with something, but felt it wasn't that serious. Perhaps he was having an off day. "Espio...are you sure you can finish your shift?"

"Do I even have a choice?" the chameleon groaned with a slight roll of his eyes. "Rob threw down the gavel. I'm on the hook until he says I've served my time." Espio suddenly scowled, and stubbornly folded his arms. " And I STILL didn't get any bread..."

Sue sighed. "I'm sorry, but I can't help," she said. "Listen, after your shift, would you like to come help? My hovercar's going to get a couple o'cannons, and I wouldn't mind having an extra set of hands around. How about it?"

All of a sudden the teen perked back up, and leaned forward with interest. "CANNONS?? Dude, I'd LOVE to help!! I'll as Rob as soon as I'm done here!!" Espio's eyes glittered with imagination. Man, I wonder I'll get to shoot something!!

Sue responded with a hearty laugh. "All right, then. Boy, you must be eager to get out of here, huh?" She rose from her seat and moved the stool to its original location. "Just stay focused on your duty and try not to drift off, okay, bud?"

"I knooooooow," the teen groaned, sighing in resignation as his duties were about to resume. "Anyway, you'll have to ask Rob if I can come. If he catches me anywhere other than here or the archery range, he's gonna have my head on a stake in the war room." Then, after a slight pause, he added, "...But don't tell him I fell asleep."

Sue gave a slight chuckle. "Don't worry. This secret's safe with me. Just don't do it anymore, 'kay? Or try not to. Later!" She carefully descended the ladder, leaving her friend to resume his guard duty atop the tower. Now would be a good time for a lunch break, anyway, she thought. Better go ask Lindy if she wants a nibble...
