The overlander's brow twitched involuntarily. "Mmmmmoreso it would likely become a thorn in everyone's side," Snively droned. Before continuing, the assistant shuffled over to the desk he usually sat at during his visits -- the only thing in the room not coated in dust. "Dr. Robotnik does not favor... individualism. The questions you have concern matters that aren't necessary to your objectives. Dr. Robotnik most likely wouldn't approve of you, apparently, having your own thoughts." He doesn't even approve when I have my own thoughts. "It would probably start out with him constantly trying to fix you, just like I was telling you to go to maintenance... Mmmmbut when he realized that your curiosity isn't something he can fix, he'd likely dismantle you." Snively's expression grimmed a bit -- not really for Metal's likely fate, but rather for his disdain for his uncle. "As I before, Dr. Robotnik doesn't keep those that don't work the way he wants them to. If he gets wind of independence, he won't hesitate to stamp it out."

Dismantled. Something about that word bothered him. "I am defective?"

"I don't know," Snively replied honestly, accompanying the answer with a light shrug. "You're an anomaly, for sure."

An anomaly. The metallix quietly stood there digesting that. His programming had detected several, yet no amount of scanning could seem to register what or even why, much less correct it. A flaw. This... curiosity... was a flaw. And it would cause him to be dismantled. To be shut down permanently and taken apart to be recycled. The metallix quickly decided he didn't favor that idea.

At that moment, the robotic doppleganger wasn't the only one immersed in thought. Snively had again taking to eyeing Metal carefully, his chin gingerly resting against his right palm. Treating this robot as a person was one of the most counter-intuitive experiences of his life. This thing was just a hunk of metal and plastic, built from scratch by his own uncle! And he was treating it like a human being!! Still, if he were to reap any benefit form this, Snively reminded himself he would need to be pragmatic. Even if Metal weren't really a person, he'd still need to treat the metallix in that way if there would be any shot of getting what he wanted in this endeavor. Perhaps if he were just to think of the experience as a rather unorthodox method of programming... The overlander grimaced. Programming was frustrating enough without having to pretend some hunk of scrap metal was his equal, but upon further reflection, it was trifling at best when compared to the other stresses in his miserable life. Snively's attention centered once more on the metallix. "Any other questions?"

Metal's eyes drifted over until they'd locked on Snively. For the longest time he only stared at him as he worked out how to ask his next question. "This unit requests information regarding how to avoid being disassembled."

Well, this was a topic Snively certainly knew a great deal on. Pondering briefly on just how much he should divulge, the assistant eventually droned, "Don't attract attention. If Dr. Robotnik doesn't notice your existance more than necessary, he's less likely to take out his frustrations on you -- or notice your mistakes."

Again the metallix stared silently at him for what seemed the longest time. "Acknowledged."

Silence fell in the old library like a fresh layer of dust. Snively pushed back his green sleeve to check his watch; if he was gone much longer, it could start to look suspicious. "I need to be going," the human announced, rising to his feet and approaching the doorway. Before turning into the corridor, however, his glance met with the metallix one more time. "Don't stay here too long."

Watching the small human leave, Metal looked back toward where he had previously sat and pondered to himself. Wandering over to the desk he retrieved the book that had been offered to him earlier and scanned through it. Though he was capable of reading, it was strictly limited to the alphabet commonly used by humans - he quickly realized this was of a language he couldn't understand. Setting the book down and glancing around, he picked up another and scanned it - the same problem presented itself. With Snively gone it seemed as though the metallix was at an impas. Pondering over what to do with his situation he eventually just turned and marched off.
