Dash shook his head with a sigh and pointed at his ears again. "I still can't hear you. The implants in my ears are messed up, and I'm not that good at reading lips."

@segaray@ Meanwhile, the squirrel seemed to be returning to the world of the waking. Ray sat up and blinked, and tenderly held the back of his head. With as much as he tended to pass out like a jittery goat, you'd think he'd wear a helmet or something.
The sight that was ready to greet him was quite a surprise: Everyone was rather calm again, even around the creepy droidman. Ray's ears drooped uncertainly as he leaned close to Midi to whisper, "So... We're s-sure he's not gonna like... c-cut out our organs and sell 'em on eBay??"

"Beats the hell out of me," she frowned, eyeing the guys distrustingly. Zachary ignored them, instead opting to frown at the answer Dash had given him. Glancing at the weird contraption in the tenrec's ears he hummed thoughtfully to himself, switching his hand back to normal and then proceeding to shift its fingers into tool mode. "Hmm. Dang it. I don't have one small enough on hand," he muttered, not really realizing the pun he'd just made, "If I had my other tools I could possibly fix that."

At the mention of tools, Ray's ears suddenly perked up. However, he found himself at odds; that roboman was still creeping the hell out of him, and Midi didn't seem too inclined to trust him, either. Yet, at the same time, that also robot-y friend of Midi's didn't seem bothered by him... and the crazy devil seemed to have left him alone... Frowning slightly, as he wondered if this was a bad idea, Ray eyed the dirty concrete and mumbled, "Um... I have tools..."

Zack glanced over at Ray, looking the squirrel up and down carefully. "Where? I don't see any toolbelts on you." he asked after a moment.

@segaray@ At the sign of doubt, Ray shifted his weight in hesitation, then reached behind his back and began to idly rummage in his malletspace. A moment or so later, the carpenter produced his old toolbelt -- tools and all. "I don't normally keep it with me," he quietly explained. "But it's gettin' kinda old so I was gonna get a new one but you can't REALLY pick a new one out unless you know how it'll work when it's full soIbroughtmyoldonealongsoIcouldtestanynewoneIpickedout." Cringing visibly, the fluffy flying squirrel took a clearly reluctant step toward the partial robian and offered his belt out at arm's length. "IfIletyouuseitwillyoupromisenottodissectusandstickusinglasstubes?!"

Dash glanced from the echidna, to his ... swiss army hand, and then to the squirrel and his toolbelt, putting two and two together. "Are you going to try and fix them...?"

Zachary was taken aback at the sudden appearance of the toolbelt, looking around in confusion. "Where the heck were you keeping that thing?!" he asked, then paused, "I... Actually, I don't want to know." he muttered, snatching the belt without acknowledging the squirrel's concerns - honestly, the guy was really starting to annoy him. Turning back toward Dash, the echidna nodded in response to his question and gestured for him to sit down while he looked for a small enough tool.

The 'hedgehog' shifted uneasily. Should he really trust some stranger to fix his cybernetics? They were pretty vital to him, after all, and he couldn't really afford for any mistakes to be made... but at the same time, walking around with them offline wasn't helping him either. He couldn't even -hear-, after all. With an uneasy sigh, he took a seat on a overturned garbage can. "Just be careful with them."

Zachary sighed, not really having - or wanting, for that matter - to get sidetracked like this. As the echidna fished out the tool he needed, he idly pulled Vize's radar our and gave it a glance just to ease his mind. The stone still hadn't moved after all this time. He wasn't sure whether or not this bothered him. Turning back to the task at hand, the echidna carefully removed the implant's casing, exposing the delicate instruments beneath. It only took him a few seconds of carefully prodding around before he spotted something. "Ah ha. There's your problem," he said, even though he knew the tenrec couldn't hear him. "Blown fuse." Setting the instrument in his hand down, Zachary turned and wandered over to a nearby junk pile. Carefully tossing useless junk aside so not to make much noise, he picked up a decapitated SWATbot head and carefully began to peel off its casing with the aid of his mechanical arm's claws. Eventually he walked back, carrying a couple minuscule fuses in his hand which he was currently rubbing against his chest fur to clean off. Midi, meanwhile, had gotten what was probably a lot closer than what Dash was comfortable with, staring at the now exposed electronics in his ear with a look of amazement. "Dude, that is so cool."

Dash leaned slightly away from Midi, an expression of annoyance on his features. "Do you mind?" Of course, with focusing on Midi he didn't notice that Zachary had more or less just gotten parts out of the trash.

@segaray@ "..." Ray suddenly realized that he was now standing by himself, as Midi had darted over to the hubbub. Glancing about, the squirrel quickly reminded himself that this was definitely not the kind of place he wanted to be by himself in. He gulped nervously; the tall, dark buildings made him feel even smaller and more powerless than usual. As a shiver darted down his back, Ray scrambled toward the others, and eventually decided to linger next to Crash.

Crash was leaning against the wall of the alley, and glanced down at the squirrel that was now lurking next to him. "..."

The bat's face became crossed with her own annoyed expression, backing away slightly. "Geez, don't have a cow." "Shoo," the echidna muttered, swatting a hand at her. Putting his focus back on Dash he proceeded to carefully remove the old blown fuse and install the new one. "Testing?" he asked once it was secure, "Can you hear me?"

The tenrec winced a bit as his hearing suddenly snapped back into commission. "Yeah, that works fine, thanks. I think the other one is still borked though."

Crash just... stared at Ray a little longer, then sighed, looking down the alleyway, apparently deciding to ignore the squirrel. "... Hmph." And possibly everyone else.

"Getting to it," Zack muttered distractedly, now working on screwing the cover back in place. Once that was finished he started working on the other ear. "Must have taken quite a noise to pop both of these," he said almost absent-mindedly after a few moments, setting the new fuse in place. "There. How's that?"

Dash tilted his head side to side, checking to see if he could pick up the environmental noise. Everything seemed well. "I sort of got hit by a low flying aircraft." Getting up, he smiled and nodded slightly to the older echidna. "I guess this means I owe you one." Shifting in position, he inspected the alley more thoroughly. "What is this place?"

"Bah, don't worry about it," Zachary shrugged, pulling out the radar somewhat impatiently and inspecting it again - still no movement. "You kids are from that... other world... aren't you?" he sighed. "I hate to tell you this but you're walking in the heart of a war zone. If you have any value to your freedom you'll stay quiet and keep out of sight. We shouldn't linger too long around here either." "Wait. What? War zone?!"

@segaray@ All at once Ray's fur stood on end, and his eyes widened with panic. "W-W-War?! Again?!" It wasn't long before tears began to well and spill from his eyes, and Ray buried his face betwixt his hands, rapidly mumbling to himself. "Notagainnot *hic* againIdon'twanna *hic* dothisagain *hic hic* Idon'twannagethurtandlockedup *hic* againIcan'tIcan'tIjust *hic* wanngaoHOME!!!"

Bristling over the squirrel's sudden outburst, Zachary quickly moved in and grabbed him, slapping a hand over his mouth. "I said be quiet!" he hissed. "You wanna attract every SWATbot in the city?!" Glancing around at their surroundings tensely, he gave Ray a jerk and motioned to follow. "Come on. We shouldn't stay here. And so help me, keep your mouth shut!"

Crash only moved enough to note Zack and Ray's passage, his ears laying back a little, before he slowly followed. How long would it take before he finally did just kill someone? Was he just on his way to a homicidal meltdown? It was these sorts of thoughts occupying the devil's mind as he followed the echidna, although he glanced in Dash and Midi's direction to see if they were coming.

At the revelation of the war, Dash simply sighed and shook his head. "This place gets better and better." He paused, frowning and glancing out at the opening of the alley. "Some teammates of mine are around here somewhere, now that you've fixed my ear I should probably try and get in contact with them..."

@segaray@ Meanwhile, Ray had apparently begun to hyperventilate. Flashbacks to being kept in that sweltering G.U.N. prison were bad enough without being manhandled by a scary cyborg. Ray stumbled along for a few steps, then quickly came to a stop once more when Zack had released him. Already shaking uncontrollably, the panicked squirrel leaned awkwardly against the nearest wall and struggled to catch his wheezing breath.

Unlike most of the others, Midi just rooted her feet into the ground rather than follow after. "Whoa, whoa, how do we even know we can trust this guy?" she asked. "Heck, even if there is some kind of war going on, how do we even know this guy's on the 'right' side?! We don't even know his name!" "You haven't told me yours either," Zachary snapped. "What's my name got to do with what side I belong on anyway?

Crash, who was behind the panicking squirrel, paused for a moment in front of him. After a moment of looking down at him, he, without a word, just picked up Ray, and put him on his shoulders. Even if he was set towards being some homicidal maniac, he wasn't one YET, and he wasn't gonna let that fear control how he acted around ANYBODY. Even a neurotic squirrel.

To the echidna's comment Dash nodded in agreement. "You know, he has a point there." Walking further down the alley he paused, and moved off a bit to the side, well away from everyone else. "If you don't mind, I'm gonna see if I can make a little collect call right now. I'll be right with you guys in a moment." That said, he lifted his mechanical arm to his ear, pressed a button, and waited for the moment of truth.

Midi huffed. "That's not the point!" Zachary frowned as the tenrec wandered off and sighed. "Well if he's going to mess around I'm going to go run an errand you kids don't need to be dragged around for. I should be back in about ten minutes." He pulled his hood back up and began to walk off, checking the end of the alley to make sure the coast was still clear. He glanced back over at Midi and gave her an annoyed look. "By the way? My name's Zachary. You could have asked for it at any time." Elsewhere, another small group had been moving their way through the city. Lance blinked at the tracer in his hand as it suddenly received a new signal. "Hey, Dash just appeared."

@segajulie@ Following alongside the wolf, Julie blinked in surprise and pulled Lance's tracer down to her eyelevel. "Are you serious? ... Wow. I wonder where he came from." Scrunching her mouth in idle thought, the pangolin shrugged. "Well, he's on the way. Let's go pick him up."
