Sparing a brief moment to glance at the bowl, then back into the trash can, the carrit snatched it out of the doctor's hand, while trying to move away from the physical contact with his other hand. " Thanks." Patches mumbled, before seeming to contemplate the bowl for a moment... and then doing exactly as predicted, hunching over the bowl and... well... Losing her lunch.

Luke simply watched in silence as Patches vomitted into the bowl. In pauses between regurgitations, he looked back down at his clipboard again.
"According to the test results, you have Shigella. One does not begin to feel its effects until 36 to 72 hours after ingesting it, and symptoms include nausia, vomitting, and diarrhea, as well as neurological effects such as dizziness."
He paused to look back up at Patches.
"Fortunately, it will pass on its own after a few days. You just have to make sure you keep yourself hydrated to compensate for all the fluids you'll lose. Also, you will probably feel exhausted for a few more days after recovering."

To her credit, Patches was actually able to look up at Luke as he described the symptoms of... whatever it was she had. But one of them stood out. One that would ruin her day even MORE. "What... what was that last one? Before the dizziness?"

"Diarrhea," Luke repeated, "it can be quite severe, with cramps progressing to... classical... ... dysentery... ... ..."
The doctor trailed off as he began to realize the severity of the symptom that Patches hadn't even displayed yet. There was only one real logical conclusion to that: It was going to present itself very, very soon. And knowing how the fates worked, that would probably be right about now, since he just brought it up.
Sheepishly, the doc pointed with his thumb over his shoulder and out the door.
"... Bathroom's down the hall, first door on the left."

Patches was quiet for a moment, looking up at him like that was some kind of horrid joke. After a moment, though, the carrit decided that maybe, symptoms or no, she should follow his advice. "I'm feeling... still kinda ok. ... But I think I'll go anyway." So the carrit walked slowly down the hall, following the doctor's directions and locking the door with a click behind her.

Luke simply stood outside the door and waited. It didn't take much in terms of etiquette to know that talking to someone through the bathroom door was... frowned upon, but it left the doctor with a considerable lack of options as he waited for the carrit to... do her business.
"... ... ..."
... Cue awkward silence.

It would only be a minute or two before the door clicked open again, and a single gold eye looked up at Luke through the crack, obviously her good eye, as she hid her fouled eye behind the door, even if the doctor had already seen the injury. "... A few days, you said? Then I'm outta here, afterwards." In theory, at least.

Luke was slightly startled by Patches suddenly opening the door again, but he quickly shrugged it off to hear her comment.
"Yes, well..." the doctor began, noticably stumbling as he spoke, "I think it'd be good if you could... um... stay. For a bit. I need to make sure the Shigella doesn't get a second wind and that you remain hydrated and well-rested during your recovery. I... don't think you'd have much of either... you know... out there."

"... ... ..." The carrit seemed to consider this, making no move to close the door again for the moment. He's right. I barely get enough to get by when I'm healthy. Me being sick, I'd be dead meat within a few days."... ... ... Fine."

The doctor smiled warmly.
"Thank you. I'll go see if I can set up someplace for you to sleep tonight."
With that, Luke walked off to let Patches finish doing her business. Inside, his logical side was screaming bloody murder at him: How could he let a stray stay overnight, let alone however long he was going to let her? The beastcatchers would be all over him! And he didn't have the equipment to let her stay, either! This wasn't a hospital; he didn't have patient rooms!
At the same time, however, he brushed the issues aside. The beastcathers didn't have to know. After all, she wasn't an 'offical' patient. Furthermore, he could simply close off one of the examination rooms with any sort of flimsy excuse and let her stay in it. Certainly no one would question him about it, and she'd be able to relax in there without fear of someone discovering her.
Shaking those final doubts out of his head, Luke went into one of the examination rooms and began to set it up for Patches to sleep in. The risks didn't matter: he was a doctor, it was his duty to help her.

After a somewhat extended length of time, Patches finally came down the hall, walking slowly, and carefully placing her feet one in front of the other. She would NOT fall over again, not in front of a human. So, as she approached the doctor, her expression was one of intense focus, her eyes mostly on the floor where she would place her foot rather than on anything in front of her. Which almost resulted in her running into him, except she glimpsed his leg, and stopped just short of doing so.

Feeling the carrit's presense behind him, Luke turned around just in time to see her stumble to a stop.
"Oh, there you are. I set aside one of the examination rooms for you," the doctor explained, motioning towards said room, "I removed all the dangerous equpiment and I'll make sure no one else goes inside. You'll be able to rest and recover in there while I work during the day."

The carrit took another few careful steps, so she could look into the room. She was quiet as she looked from the bed, to the sink, and the trashcan. It seemed she'd be, except for using the restroom, set. Hopefully she'd be able to make it from this room to the bathroom without falling over. She figured she could manage that. With that in mind, she looked over her shoulder, and just nodded once in approval of the arrangement.

The doctor nodded back.
"I suppose I should let you rest now... Goodnight, Patches."

The carrit didn't respond at first, climbing onto the bed and lying down. "G'night, doc..."

Luke quietly shut the door and made his way back to the front of his practice. He was probably violating about a dozen different laws by doing this, but that made little difference. He had made a vow when he became a doctor that he would aid all who needed him, overlander or thrope. He wasn't going to let some morally-questionable rules get in the way.
As the doctor reached the front door, he stopped. He was certainly planning on heading home for the night, but now he had someone he was taking care of. He couldn't leave Patches alone; not only did he want to be there in case something happened overnight, he had to make sure none of his co-workers reached the office in the morning before he did and find the carrit. After a moment of thought, Luke walked back to the waiting room, where a few sofas lined the walls. Sitting down on one of them, he gently lied down and begin to drift to sleep.
Sleeping in the waiting room so you could keep an eye on the stray you took in illegally... That certainly wasn't in the job description...
