Luke scratched the back of his head as he tried to find a good way to word what he was about to say, although Dash's response gave him an obvious starting point.
"Of course, Ms. Thalia, I'm not accusing you of abusing Dash. It's just that... Dash, as you probably already know, is from outside of Eden. While they are not, despite what some say, particularly 'wild', they do generally have a stronger sense of independence than thropes that are raised here. More specifically, they are usually quite uncomfortable with the thought of 'just' being a pet."
The doctor shifted around on his feet. It was quite obvious to anyone that he was having a difficult and uncomfortable time explaining himself.

Phoebe released a sigh of relief. That's all this was about? "Actually, I'm glad you brought this up, because I've been wondering about exactly that point. I don't know how to keep him FROM feeling like 'just a pet'. I certainly don't think that little of him, but it's like... it's all he thinks of himself. I've had a difficult time engaging him; he usually withdraws from me when I want to do something together unless I give him a sundrop packet." Looking down at the tenrec again, the young woman stroked at his forehead with her fingertips. "Quite frankly, I've been beginning to suspect you don't like me."

The tenrec rocked slightly on his feet, peering up again to Phoebe. "It's not that..." He looked away again, apparently having difficulties expressing himself. "...it's that this is nothing like home."

"You can talk to me about it whenever you want, though, y'know." Phoebe continued to delicately caress the thrope's forehead. "I can't try to make things better if you don't give me a chance."

Luke nodded in agreement.
"She's right, Dash. Communication is important if you want to feel more comfortable here. The more you talk, the more you two can learn about each other."

A point, yes, but he doubted it was going to fix everything. Giving a nod, he instead focused away from the two.

Phoebe took to rubbing the tenrec's nearest ear between her thumb and index finger, hoping to ease his discomfort. "Well, we decided earlier that we were going to have a talk soon anyway; we'll make it a point to go over the things that bother you, too. How does that sound?"

The tenrec nodded, though his gaze remained averted. "Sounds fine."

A small smile appeared on Luke's face. It looked like it would be a rather slow process, but at least Dash showed willingness to open up to his owner; it could only improve from there.
"Well, I'm glad we had this discussion," the doctor finally interjected, "as I said before, the cost for removing the stitches was already paid for, so you're free to leave whenever you like. Ms. Thalia, it was a pleasure meeting you, and Dash, it was good to see you again."
He tried his hardest not to show it, but the doctor was very relieved that the conversation went as well as it did. Some owners were... a bit more hostle to his suggestions, so the fact that Phoebe responded so positively was a very good thing for him.

"Thank you again, doctor," the florist nodded, clipping Dash's leash back onto his collar. "If anything else comes up, I'll be sure to bring him back to your clinic." After shaking the vet's hand, Phoebe headed for the door and opened wide enough for both herself and her beast to pass. "C'mon, Dash. I'll buy you a popsicle for being such a trooper."
