Shortly outside the building where he'd previously encountered Metal, Rush discovered he was in a dirty city.
A very, very, very dirty city.
The filth he'd seen inside was only the tip of the iceberg, it seemed.
"What the hell happened here?" Rush mumbled to himself as he kicked away a stray piece of scrap metal lying in his path. Dull, tarnished machinery and tall metal buildings stood like lonely sentinels around him, their spires and towers reaching up to a permanently overcast sky as if seeking redemption and sunlight to end their miserable existence. Gray was the dominant color, along with an unhealthy amount of rust-brown accreted from multiple run-ins with acid rain. Grime coated nearly every surface, giving it all a derelict and ruined look.
His next quip summed it up best: "It looks like the Apocalypse came early this year."
For the first time he became worried. Did anybody at all live here? From the looks of things, this place had been abandoned to the elements long ago. Was its only inhabitant that disembodied head he'd seen earlier?
Another thought struck Rush as he examined the broken windows of what had once probably been some apartment buildings. Who built all of this? And why did they leave?
Several of his questions were promptly answered as he rounded the next corner: a pair of robots, humanoid in appearance but lacking heads of any kind apart from a rather featureless dome, were walking in lockstep down the street together, facing away from him.
Rush's eyes lit up. So there were people living here after all! Maybe they could help him get back home. He jogged over to the robots, waving his arms and calling out to them to get their attention. "Hey, excuse me! Yo, chrome domes! Over here!"
They turned to face him as he approached. He began to talk quickly in his excitement. "Yeah, hi. Listen, I'm kinda lost and I need some hel--"
"PRIORITY THREE, FREEDOM FIGHTER DETECTED," The robots cut him off simultaneously, lifting up their arms to reveal laser blasters installed within them. "CAPTURE BY ORDER OF LORD ROBOTNIK."
Rush stared blankly. "Wha--?"
Laser fire interrupted him again as multiple battle programs kicked in, making him dodge to the side and roll to a crouching standstill.
"What the HELL was THAT?" He barked, clearly annoyed with the robots' unwelcome demeanor. He began changing his arm to a buster, but a sudden jolt of pain and multiple error messages appearing on his optics reminded him that his hand was damaged. Growling, he switched to his other hand instead. Lifting the cannon and charging it, he warned the robots, "Try that again and you'll have a few new exhaust ports!"
The robots did not seem intimidated at all. They marched towards him, charging to fire again.
"Okay, then, have it your way." Rush grinned savagely, actually pleased the robots had taken the course of action they had. "SUCK IT DOWN, BOYS!"
And the battle began.
Across the city, multiple robots recieved warning of an intruder in one of the city's innermost sectors, as well as multiple requests for reenforcements. One by one, the warning broadcasts were cut off abruptly as their senders met an untimely demise. Yet replacements continued to come, unflappable and infinitely patient.
Rush didn't mind at all.
Soon he'd taken to the rooftops in a bid to get more room for maneuvering about. He ducked, leaped and slid under lasers inbetween bounding from roof to roof, firing ceaselessly at the robots converging upon him
Cackling like a madman, Rush blew another mindless drone to Kingdom Come and leaped through the smoke of the explosion, surprising the hovering robot behind it with another shot to the optics that sent it careening out of control into several of those humanoid robots that had followed him up the fire escape ladders.
He still didn't know what any of the things were called, so he'd chosen to give them all names instead. The dark blue humanoids that had first revealed this city's hostilty to him had a tendency to walk oddly when they ween't chasing him at full sprint. They seemed almost like ducks in that aspect, so he'd named them "Duckies". The hovering oval robots with the spotlights on their bellies had windshields that looked similar to a ship from one of his favorite videogames; he'd named them "Metroids", or "Mets" for short. Those flattened aircraft that kept appearing and vanishing out of nowhere kinda reminded him of hammerhead sharks when faced head-on, so he called them "Sharkbait". He also saw some bizarrely-shaped brown droids about the size of his head hovering nearby once or twice, but they always flew off before he could shoot them. Bugger if he knew what to call those things..."scrap", probably, since that's what they'd be if he ever got his hands on one.
It would not be long before the corgibot's rampage of destruction brought the whole of Robotropolis' might down on his head...but until that happened, he was gonna enjoy himself for a while.
KABOOM, the reddish light from another explosion momentarily lit up the sky, as the gleeful laughter of a pleased maniac filled the streets.
