And so there he was. Wandering around the village looking for people he barely knew, in a place he didn’t really even know the layout of (the tour so had not helped). At this point, he didn’t think he could even make his way back to his hut. BUT… the princess asked him to find some people, so he was. That was strange, really. A princess, of all things, asking him to do something. Then again, it wasn’t just that she was a princess; it was that she and the rest of them had been so nice to him since he came here, even if one of them did give him a concussion. Then again it was a little kid apparently, and you really couldn’t hold them accountable. But he owed them anyway. Specially for putting up with Lance. That was something to admire as well.
Of course, none of that changed the fact he had no idea where to go to find either Sonic or Bunnie.
Pausing, the tenrec looked around, attempting to find some kind of landmark. Maybe, just maybe, that tour had been useful for SOMETHING, although he doubted it. Instead, he spotted a fennec fox sitting on a log nearby, crying silently into her fluffy tail as if it were security blanket. And suddenly, he felt incredibly uncomfortable. He glanced around again, this time looking for anyone else that could be in the area instead of landmarks. There was none. He sighed. While he wasn’t really up to it, there was no one else around, and he couldn’t just leave someone who was obviously distressed without doing anything at all to try and help him or her. And so, he wandered over to the fox. “You alright?”
The fox shook her head and buried her face further into the fluff of her tail. “G-go away! I-I don’t n-need to h-hear it, I already kn-know my ears are huge.”
The tenrec grimaced, then pivoted on one foot and began to walk away, but stopped. No, he couldn’t just leave like that that easily. So he turned back again. “I thought fennecs we’re supposed to have ears like that.”
The fennec gave an exasperated sigh, then pulled her ears down over her face “I KNOW! I-“ she hiccupped between her words and sobs, “But t-tell that to everyone else!”
Dash continued to grimace, and shifted his weight back and forth from one foot to the other. This really wasn’t his department. “I kinda know how it is, everyone calls me a hedgehog… it gets to you after awhile.” A corner of one of his eyes twitched. “Even hedgehogs make the mistake, though you’d think they’d know better.”
The fennec looked up at this point, picking up a pair of spectacles that had been lying on the log beside her. Wiping away her tears she adjusted the glasses onto the bridge of her nose and examined the newcomer. “Of course you’re not a hedgehog, you’re a lowland streaked tenrec.” She sniffed again and pulled at one of her ears.
Dash stared in amazement. This was one of… no, not one of, THE first time ANYONE had actually knew what the hell he was without him yelling at them about it in the first place. Noticing his bewildered expression the fennec hiccupped again and continued to adjust her glasses. “Oh, I’m sorry, did I get that wrong?” Dash stared in a amazement a few moments longer, then burst into a laugh. The fennec cringed at the sudden loud noise and pinned her ears back again, however, the tenrec noticed and stifled his laughter.
“No, no you didn’t get it wrong. Just that if I hadn’t just met you I would kiss you for that.”
The fox blushed beneath her fur, unsure as of how to respond to that. Luckily, the tenrec continued to speak so there was no need for a reply from her. “Have you seen… uh… Sonic or Bunnie around? Sally needs them.”
She paused, then quirked an ear up, where it swiveled about for a few moments. Then she pointed in a direction. “Bunnie is over in that direction.” And this she knew to be true. She could hear the rabbot’s mechanical joints creaking, ever so faintly, from that direction. The tenrec gave a grateful nod then began to jog off in that direction. “Thank you ‘mam, you’ve been a big help!”
And watching the tenrec run off she couldn’t help but feel a little better, as it was her ears that had helped him out. And she smiled a little bit, until the sound of a sonic boom reached her ears, causing her to give an exasperated gasp and clutch her ears to the side of her head. “That noisy hedgehog!”
